First look at ‘Iron Man 2′ hits the interweb!

You can get your first peek at the flick over at USA Today

It’s a pretty casual shot of RDJ as Stark chillin’ at a set of computers, but the real awesomeness is in the background…he’s in a workshop chock-full of Iron Man armors. Looks like the stakes are definitely upped in part two!

Cory Walker returns to Invincible!

Holy Stromboli! Look at this pure awesome…

Head here for more of my thoughts on this…but the press release follows below…

G4 TV’S ATTACK OF THE SHOW ANNOUNCES INVINCIBLE CO-CREATOR CORY WALKER’S RETURN!
Cory Walker to illustrate an upcoming two-issue arc setting the stage for the future of INVINCIBLE!

15 April 2009 (Berkeley, CA) – Yesterday afternoon during G4 TV series Attack of the Show’s Fresh Ink segment, Blair Butler announced acclaimed artist and INVINCIBLE co-creator Cory Walker will return to illustrating INVINCIBLE in a two-part story setting the stage for the upcoming ‘Viltrumite War’!

“While Cory has been working behind the scenes in the INVINCIBLE crew, it’s great to have him back for these two very special issues,” INVINCIBLE co-creator and writer Robert Kirkman said. “They’re going to be pretty damn momentous in the grand scheme of INVINCIBLE as we place the spotlight on INVINCIBLE’s dad, Nolan, and his new partner, Allen the Alien, while they seek the only weapons capable of taking down the Viltrumite empire. It’s gonna be awesome!”

Walker and Kirkman’s newest creative collaboration takes place after the fan-favorite issue in which Invincible’s father, Nolan, broke free from Viltrumite prison with the assistance of Allen the Alien. Their successful escape led to Nolan joining forces with Allen and the Coalition of Planets in their efforts taking down the Viltrumite empire. Walker’s new action-packed two-part shocker will have ramifications leading up to the major confrontation the entire series has been building towards as the ‘Vitrumite War’ begins in INVINCIBLE #75.

INVINCIBLE #66, a 32-page full color comic book for $2.99, will be in stores September, 2009.

Just a quick note on Sam Kieth’s awesomeness…

March 16, 2009 on 1:05 pm | In Grassroots comics love, Monkey see...monkey blogs...

I was just reading Sam Kieth’s Batman: Secrets and had to make a quick post about how much I am completely mesmerized by his art.

The local library where I went to college (Columbia, MO) had a few Sam Kieth books, among which was Epicurus the Sage by William Messner-Loebs with art by Kieth.

As a classics major, I was interested and picked it up. I loved it—for numerous reasons that reading it yourself will better elaborate—and have enjoyed Kieth’s art ever since.

So, what was the point of this post? First, that Sam Kieth is pretty darn great. Second, that you should go read Epicurus the Sage, which is also great. And third, go check out your local library’s comic collection—it could be well worth your while!

Also, on an only slightly related side note, I just read some other older Batman stuff worth mentioning. Collected in the TPB “False Faces,” Brian K. Vaughan’s three-issue Batman arc (not to mention an issue of Detective Comics and two-issue Wonder Woman story) is a fascinating read. Certainly not his best work (as he freely admits in the intro—a must read if you check out the trade, as it is hilarious), but it is incredibly interesting to see this now-accomplished writer’s early efforts into a medium he has left an eternal mark on with Y: The Last Man and Ex Machina.

Expanding my “side note” much longer than is logical, “False Faces” also makes a great gift for BKV and “Lost” fanatics like Round Howard helmer Josh Wigler, who had a birthday last week!

Now who thought this was a good idea?

March 16, 2009 on 12:18 pm | In Monkey see...monkey blogs...

Though I don’t usually post reactionary stuff to things I see online (ok, ok, I just did a few in the last ten posts…but gimme a break!), I couldn’t help but say something—albeit briefly—about this.

The Sci Fi channel is changing its name to Syfy?!

Ok…so you want to bring in an audience that isn’t just nerds (no matter how awesome we nerds are!), I get that. But, why on earth do you change it to something that appears to sound like a slang term for syphilis? And yes, I get that they are going for a name that is phonetically the same, but I can already see the Urban Dictionary entry now…

1. Syfy — 543 up, 97 down

a case of syphillis
Yo Bro! I hear that honey gave you a mad case of Syfy!

I love the Sci Fi channel—and a name change isn’t going to alter that fact— but still, I do not care for that new name.

Real life Spider-Man?

March 16, 2009 on 11:59 am | In Monkey see...monkey blogs...

Looks like Marvel Studios is going to have to compete with Lifetime for the rights to this TV movie!

In all seriousness, from comic fans everywhere, congrats to Mike Dello Stritto. I’m sure he’s just pleased to be walking again, but his story has brought a smile (and maybe a tear of joy?) to the faces of comic fans everywhere.

Thanks to my broham, Dan Gibbons, for passing me the link to the CNN story.

Truly, the end is nigh…

March 6, 2009 on 9:59 am | In Monkey see...monkey blogs...

Now this is a portent of doom if I’ve ever seen one…

A Marmaduke movie?!?! Good gravy!

Back in my college days, we had a free newspaper readership program that allowed me to indulge in the finest in newspaper strips everyday (usually during a boring lecture). Each and every day, I read every strip in the paper, and each and every day Marmaduke just infuriated me. I had a dog growing up and love animals (especially dogs!), but this f@#&ing Marmaduke…Gah!

Oddly enough, I always (ALWAYS!) loved the Family Circus…each and every day.

An amalgamation of nerdy things I love!

February 20, 2009 on 5:59 pm | In Monkey see...monkey blogs...

Hey Folks!
If you haven’t seen “Coraline” yet, go see it! It’s great!

“But why is it so great?” you undoubtedly ask. Well, for many reasons, here’s “one”…

The flick is a clay figure stop-motion, 3-D movie based on a novel by Neil Gaiman. It features some choice voice talent, as well! Among the vocal cast is rad dude John Hodgman (who I’ve expressed my complete fan-dom of before) as the voice of Coraline’s father and other father, a character who later becomes (voice-wise) They Might Be Giant’s (my fav band!) John Linnell when an original TMBG song is featured in the flick. TMBG has the song and clip on their myspace, but I’ve brought it here to show you 32 seconds of proof as to why you must see this movie.

OBAMA: “For the love of Crom, am I the only one here who wants to keep the U.S. technologically competitive?”

January 28, 2009 on 2:35 pm | In Monkey see...monkey blogs...

With all the comic talk going on about Barack Obama over the past few months, it’s pretty fun and refreshing to see The Onion grab that bicycle and pedal it over the edge of the cliff. Check out the article explaining Barack’s disgust with his cabinet over their lack on Conan reference comprehension…

(Green and) Purple Reign

January 21, 2009 on 9:22 am | In Monkey see...monkey blogs...

Well, as I haven’t heard it elsewhere, I figured I should claim credit for a little nickname I’ve coined for the Marvel U’s new status quo. With Norman “The Green Goblin” Osborn holding the power in what Marvel is calling the “Dark Reign,” I couldn’t help but make the Prince-related joke and have been referring to it as the “Green and Purple Reign” in reference to Norman’s villain duds.

That’s all. Not a particularly thought-provoking post, but hopefully it garners a few chuckles.
