‘Marvel Apes’ meets the Loudest Monkey!

September 3, 2008 on 11:08 am | In Great Comic Quotes!, Monkey see...monkey blogs..., THWACK!

With a last name like Gibbons—which led to a having a blog named “The Loudest Monkey” (and yes, I know a gibbon is an ape and not a monkey, as I stated in my first post)—it seems inevitable that I would have to comment on Marvel’s newest miniseries and variant cover phenomenon: Marvel Apes.

I read a review copy of the book yesterday and found what is quite possibly the most astonishingly personalized talk bubble I have ever come across!

Yep, I’m a Mr. Gibbons. And yes, I have lots of hair…everywhere. So, reading this panel felt eerily like the good doctor was breaking the fourth wall. Yeah, kinda creepy.

So, between DC trying to terrify me with their peanut-filled Joker covers and Marvel putting D-List Spidey villain The Gibbon into a starring role in Marvel Apes…well, reading comics has been a particularly bizarre experience of late!

Another, albeit brief, Marvel-based monkey last name story:
I emailed editor Bill Rosemann to see if he’d be interested in answering a question about Guardians of the Galaxy for Thwack!.
His response: “Sounds fun, Jim. And how could I turn down a guy with a monkey-like last name?
Crazy!

Two days to go till Jim and Josh’s ‘THWACK!’ premieres!

July 28, 2008 on 10:32 am | In THWACK!

That’s correct, readers!

A while back, I mentioned that WizardUniverse.com assistant editor Josh Wigler and I were going to be the new team putting together Wizard’s letters column THWACK! Well, the wait for lettery goodness is nearly over!

This Wednesday—yes, just a mere two days from now—Wizard #203 hits and a new era for THWACK! begins. Here’s a tiny tease…

Don’t say I never did anything for you guys (and by “you guys,” I obviously mean you loyal readers tuning into my corner of the blogosphere)!

I do love to reward those folks who check out what I’m doing at the Loudest Monkey, Wizard Universe proper and Wizard, so here’s another little taste—that should entice you to go out and pick up issue #203—just because I’m a super nice guy (and a big tease!)…

That should be enough to help you all hold out till Wednesday. Enjoy that plastic crotch action for now and then go pick up issue #203 of Wizard to enjoy it in all its glossy-paged glory (oh, and to READ THWACK! as well).

Speaking of THWACK!…

July 16, 2008 on 12:02 pm | In Monkey see...monkey blogs..., THWACK!

I guess I’ve been a little absent on the blog front and haven’t had a chance to mention some very cool news on the magazine front. Starting with Wizard #203 (shipping at the end of the month), Wizard Universe Assistant Editor Josh Wigler and I will be taking the reigns of THWACK!, Wizard’s new letters column.

Now, I know there’s been a lot of resistance to the changing of the letters column, but Josh and I have been kicking around a lot of ideas we’re pretty psyched about and our goal is to keep it as interactive and as fun as possible. So, head on over to the Wizard Universe Message Boards and submit your questions to THWACK! or just post some comments about your favorite comics that we can grab for the “Trolling Online” section!

I’ve seen the black-and-whites for issue #203’s THWACK! and I think our first attempt at the column’s evolution turned out pretty funny while remaining informative. I think you’ll all enjoy it, but of course we welcome your feedback over on the WUMB, so don’t be shy when the issue hits to pat us on the back or kick our butts!
